Chinese Man Builds Himself Bionic Hands After 8 Years

If a man without a hand can build a pair of bionic hands for himself, we all should be able to craft ourselves a bright future as long as determination is present. Sun Jifa, a 51-year-old Chinese man who lost both hands when he was building a bomb for blast fishing, just build a new pair of bionic arms WITHOUT having hands.

Sun Jifa could not afford the hospital's prosthetic limbs after the explosive for blast fishing detonated prematurely, but desperately needed the use of his hands to work on the family farm. Instead of wallowing, though, the 51-year-old man from Guanmashan, Jilin province, northern China, just decided to build his own bionic hands.

Determined: The 51-year-old spent eight years making his bionic hand

'I survived but I had no hands and I couldn't afford to buy the false hands the hospital wanted me to have - so I decided to make my own,' he explained.

Sun spent eight years making prototypes before finally creating a pair of metal hands which can grip and hold thanks to a series of wires and pulleys inside the shell.

'I control them with movements from my elbows and I can work, love normally and feed myself just like anyone else,' explained the real life tin man.

The bionic hands are made by scrap metal like wires and pulleys, which make the hands quite heavy. Sun said each hand weighs around 0.9kg, and he has already get used to it. Also, the pair of hands can easily get hot or cold in the extremes of summer and winter according to Sun.

The Hooks

There’re hooks on both of his bionic hands, but they’re not for self defense. The hooks are to clasp the holes on equipment like farming tools, so Sun can lift those heavy tools up without breaking his bionic hands. The hook is removable, Sun can take them down whenever he wants to. Without the hook, the movement of the hands is controlled by using his elbows. For example, when his elbow moves forward, his palm will open.

With this pair of self-made artificial hands, Sun is able to eat, work, brush his teeth, wear clothes, farm, ride a bicycle, drive a motorbike, listen to phone calls,…all on his own. Just like a normal person.

He now plans to improve the design and built it for other similarly disabled people.
His perseverance is simply astounding.
